Snowflakes under smart control

Christmas lights in London’s Westminster are being controlled this year by an innovative wireless monitoring and control system.
Harvard Engineering supplied the LeafNut system to Westminster City Council to control the festive lights on Jermyn Street, which is traditionally noted for its shirtmakers and tailors.
Westminster is currently rolling out the LeafNut system across 14,000 street lights under its Smart Lights scheme, which enables lighting levels to be reduced at quiet times and restored to full brightness when needed. When complete the scheme is expected to save the Council £420,000 a year.
Engineers can control the Christmas lights via an iPad, tablet or smartphone, and receive comprehensive maintenance and energy usage reports for each lamp.
