Yahoo enters into a deal with Google for contextual online ads

Yahoo has entered into a deal with Google to serve contextual ads on some of its websites. This makes sense since Google has an immensely large presence in the online advertising space.

Yahoo has entered into a global advertising deal with the search giant Google which will result in Google ads appearing on Yahoo websites. Yahoo announced this deal on Wednesday, February 6.

The deal seems to be a win-win situation for both the companies as Yahoo gets relevant ads on its website and Google gets a larger platform to display its ads.

The deal comes seven months after Marissa Mayer took the chair as CEO of Yahoo. Marissa Mayer was formerly one of Google’s top executives.

Yahoo’s official blog post on the deal reads, “Today, we’re excited to announce that we recently signed a global, non-exclusive agreement with Google to display ads on various Yahoo! properties and certain co-branded sites using Google’s AdSense for Content and Google’s AdMob services.

By adding Google to our list of world-class contextual ads partners, we’ll be able to expand our network, which means we can serve users with ads that are even more meaningful.

For our users, there won’t be a noticeable difference in how or where ads appear. More options simply mean greater flexibility. We look forward to working with all of our contextual ads partners to ensure we’re delivering the right ad to the right user at the right time.”

The advertising will be on a more contextual basis, something that we have come to see in Google ads as well as on the social networking website, Facebook. If you are searching for shoes, or clothes or a new TV set, the ads that will appear will be relevant to what you are looking for instead of something irrelevant like property or hair care. This relevance makes it easier and more likely for a user browsing the Internet to click on the ad.

First Ubuntu-based smartphones to launch in October this year: Report

First Ubuntu-powered smartphone would see the light of day this October, says a WSJ report.

Ubuntu's open-source operating system-based smartphones will be launched as early as October this year. The revelation was made by Canonical's founder, Mark Shuttleworth in a Wall Street Journal report. According to Shuttleworth, the new phone OS will be rolled out in “two large geographic markets” in October.

The new timeline provided by Canonical is quite a bit sooner than the previous time-frame that slated the availability of Ubuntu smartphones by Q4 2013 or Q1 2014,  following the announcement of the mobile version of the open source OS.

So far, it's not yet clear which smartphones will run Ubuntu, but reports suggest the developers are working with the OS on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus device. Thus, we can expect Ubuntu OS to support Android smartphone chipsets initially. The WSJ report suggests a number of carriers are interested in the new OS-based smartphones, but Canonical is yet to decide its partner.

CNET in its report points out Ubuntu OS will be using same drivers as Android smartphones and will be capable of running on entry-level devices. The OS will be using native apps, allowing developers to create a single app for the desktop and the PC – blurring the line across the devices. The OS also supports the swiping gestures – as seen on the recently launched BlackBerry 10.

Even if Canonical launches the Ubuntu mobile OS this year, the company will have to work hard to catch up with dominant Android, iOS and the newly launched BlackBerry 10. Microsoft may have also bumped up its Windows Phone by that time, making the competition in the OS segment more intense.

Cyber criminals targeting search engine and social media users: Cisco

Online advertisements are 182 times more likely to deliver malicious content than pornographic sites, says the Cisco report.

Cisco's annual security report says Internet users are more vulnerable to cyber crime through search engines, social networking sites and online ads, contrary to the popular notion that pornographic and gambling websites are riskier. The report further says websites that users think are safe are opposite with new-age cyber criminals eyeing the mainstream websites that cater to the mass audiences.

In its report, Cisco says about 91 percent of the monitored hits to web pages were split between search engines (36 percent), online video sites (22 percent), advertising networks (13 percent) or social networks (20 percent).

"Common belief holds that one increases their individual risk to security threats when they seek out illicit content like counterfeit software, online deals, hacking sites or even view pornography," Cisco Vice President ( Borderless Networks), India and SAARC, Mahesh Gupta is quoted as saying.

"Viewing online advertisements are 182 times more likely to deliver malicious content than pornographic sites. Similarly, online shopping sites are 21 times as likely, and search engines 27 times more likely, to deliver malicious content than a counterfeit software site," he added.

Cisco's annual report sheds light on other aspects of the Internet security in the country as well. According to the report, India ranks no.1 source for the global spams, despite seeing a 18 percent slump from 2011 to 2012. India sends about 12.3 percent of the global spam, says the report. The U.S. ranks second in the list of countries sending unsolicited e-mails.

"Spammers are now designing their campaigns to convince users to click on links to visit websites where they can purchase products or services (often dubious). Once the users do that, their personal information is collected, often without their knowledge, or they are compromised in some other way," Gupta said.

English, followed by Russian, Catalan, Japanese, and Danish emerged as the top languages for spam messages in 2012. You can read the full Cisco Annual Security 2013 report here.

Sony Xperia SP 'C530X live' specs and photos leaked

Images of the next mid-range Xperia Android smartphone from Sony known by its codename "HuaShan" have just emerged.

After releasing a host of Xperia smartphones in 2012, Sony wants to continue the trend this year as well. In a recent turn of events, Sony’s next mid-range Android based Xperia smartphone, the Xperia SP (C530X live) codenamed HuaShan, surfaced online. These pictures show the Xperia SP alongside the Xperia V suggesting that the SP will have a bigger display compared to that of the Xperia V.

The leaked information about the smartphone says that it is likely that this phone may be revealed at MWC (Mobile World Congress), Barcelona this year and although Xperia SP will be a new phone, there will only be a slight difference in performance between Xperia SP C530X live and the older Xperia V as the SP live is said to have the only slightly better Adreno 320 GPU.

Other information revealed by the source was that the phone may sport a screen with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, and a removable back cover to access the memory-card. However, the battery will not be removable. The SP is said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960T SoC with a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, and will come with Android version 4.1 (Jelly Bean) out-of-the-box.

Google India launches Mapathon 2013, aims to improve local Maps offering

The top 1,000 makers stand a chance to win Android slates, smartphones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise.

Google India has announced a first-of-its-kind mapping competition – Mapathon 2013 – in a bid to improve its Google Maps service in the country. The competition starts on February 12, 2013 and culminates on March 25, 2013.

Google invites users across the country to add information about their neighbourhoods in the Maps through Google Map maker. The top 1,000 mappers in India can win Android tablets, smartphones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise.

How does the Map Maker work? “Using Google Map Maker, you can select a specific area on Google Maps and add new information based on your own local knowledge or by referencing the satellite imagery on Google Maps. With just another click, you can save and submit your input — and once the submitted edit has been verified, the new information will be added to Google Maps,” explains Google in a blog post.

Google reveals the Map Maker was first conceptualized in India and now it is used across the world. “The core belief was that users know their neighbourhoods, villages, and back yards better than anyone else, and so we designed Map Maker as the tool people could use to update these details onto a digital map.”

Google Maps is one of the popular online maps services. Google has been consistently updating its Maps service, adding improved features, panoramic images and new geographical locations across the world. Recently, Maps added panoramic high resolution images of the Grand Canyon, covering 75 miles of trails and surrounding roads of the Canyon.

Google Maps is also being used by the Election Commission of India to help North East electors locate their polling stations and access other electoral information.

Mapathon 2013 is certainly a welcome initiative from the search engine giant, as it is likely to prompt other Maps service providers in the country to improve their services.

Report: Hard drive market looking at drop in unit sales in 2013

Although HDD sales will see a drop this year, it will still maintain market dominance for storage vis-a-vis SSDs

According to a report by market research firm iSuppli, the hard drive market is expected to decline in 2013 with the drop being in double-digit percentage points. As expected the drop in unit sales of hard drives can be attributed to the rise in the sales of tablets, smartphones which completely use flash memory for storage and also the rise in solid state drive sales.

According to iSuppli the is expected to drop to USD 32.7 billion this year, which is an 11.8 per cent drop as compared to last year (from USD 37.1 billion). The trend will continue next year as see in the graph below and HDD revenues will further reduce to USD 32 billion on 2014.

Having said this, HDDs will continue to maintain market dominance due to their better cost per GB as compared to similar capacity SSDs. The HDD selling prices are expected to decline by 7 per cent this year. Ultrabooks will continue to sport HDD and SSD combos to give a better bang for the buck in terms of performance and storage. The report goes on to say that the major growth area for the HDD will be in the enterprise sector, cloud storage and big data analytics.

The battle between Western Digital and Seagate Technology will continue this year as well. While Seagate enjoyed a 50 per cent market share in the enterprise segment last year, Western Digital’s introduction of its new helium technology and coming out with a 5 TB drive holds a lot of promise according to iSuppli. This 5 TB drive is targetted at enterprise servers and storage applications.

Facebook users to cut down time spent on social network

Survey shows many users suffering from "Facebook fatigue".

 

 

A new survey conducted of Facebook users has revealed that a significant percentage of current users are planning to spend less time on the website. 27 percent of current Facebook users (38 percent of whom belong to the age group of 18-29 years), stated that they would reduce the time spent on Facebook. The survey also revealed that 61% of Facebook users have taken a voluntary break from the site for more than a couple of weeks. However, 72 percent of users don't plan to change their Facebook usage patterns.

The survey conducted by the Pew Research Centre mainly considered American Facebook users and reached the conclusion that many users were undergoing a sense of “Facebook fatigue". The San Francisco Chronicle quotes Lee Rainie, Pew Internet Project director and a co-author of the new report, "These data show that people are trying to make new calibrations in their life to accommodate new social tools.”

India currently stands in third place in terms of Facebook users with over six crore users who form nearly 70 percent of Indians who use the Internet.

Jelly Bean now on 13.6 percent Android devices, Gingerbread dips to 45.6 percent

The latest Android distribution shows Jelly Bean has continued to grow steadily while Ice Cream Sandwich is witnessing a stagnation.

Google has released its latest Android distribution stats on its Android developer site, revealing the latest version Jelly Bean (v4.1 and v4.2) is now running on 13.6 percent of all Android devices while Ice Cream Sandwich is on 29 percent. v2.3 Gingerbread is still the largest Android OS with 45.6 percent of share, but down from last month's share of 47.6 percent.

Among other older Android versions, Froyo is on 8.1 percent of all Android devices, Honeycomb is on 1.3 percent and Eclair on 2.2 percent. Here’s how the latest Android landscape looks like:

Last month's Android distribution stats showed Android Jelly Bean had for the first time crossed 10 percent share, and Gingerbread slumped below 50 percent. You can check out our coverage on the previous Android distribution .

So far, several manufacturers including have introduced Jelly Bean-based devices while many devices are in the process of receiving the JB upgrade. The latest Android version is likely to grow more in next few months with more new devices. Karbonn Smart A111 unveiled, a 5-inch answer to the Micromax Canvas 2 A110

Karbonn Smart A111 is available online for Rs. 10,290. Karbonn hasn't yet officially announced the device. It has a 5-inch display and a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

Karbonn hasn’t officially announced the Smart A111 but the device is available on the online shopping portal, Flipkart, for Rs. 10,290. The ICS-based Karbonn Smart A111 is listed to have a 5-inch display (resolution not known), and run on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM.

The A111 boasts of dual-SIM capabilities and houses a 2100mAh battery. It has 4GB built-in storage expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. Other specs include a 5MP rear camera, a front-facing camera, 3G 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity and Hotspot. It also supports Bluetooth 2.1. The device comes with 1-year manufacturer warranty for the phone and 6 months warranty for in-the-box accessories. Those interested can pick up the device from Flipkart.

Most relevantly, the Karbonn Smart A111 is the company’s 5-inch answer to Micromax’s Canvas 2 A110, which with the 5-inch screen was poised to upset the 4.5-inch Karbonn A21’s position, as they both sported very similar other specifications. Also notable, is the price point of the new 5-inch dual-core offering from Karbonn, the Smart A111 (Rs. 10,290), which is just shy of the Micromax Canvas 2 A110's mark (Rs. 10,299).

All this also means that Karbonn has two devices, the Karbonn A21 and Smart A111, with nearly identical specifications (except for the 0.5-inch screen size difference), and just Rs. 400 apart.
The Karbonn Smart A111 might sport a higher resolution screen than the Canvas 2 A110 (which has a 480x854 pixel resolution display), but probably not higher than qHD (540x960 pixels).
We've also seen Karbonn follow Micromax into the quad-core budget smartphone race, with the announcement of the Karbonn Smart Titanium 1, which is poised to compete with Micromax's A116 Canvas HD.

In terms of its specifications, the Smart Titanium 1 has a 4.5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) display, and most importantly, is powered by 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core CPU based on the MSM8225Q SoC, and Adreno 203 GPU. This is coupled with 1GB of RAM, a 4GB ROM and expandable memory via a microSD card slot. Other specifications include a 1600mAh battery, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and a front camera (presumably VGA) for video calls. Straight out-of-the-box, the phone runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Karbonn Smart Titanium 1 is the second budget quad-core smartphone to be announced for Indian markets. In late January, we saw the unveiling of the Micromax A116 Canvas HD. In terms of specifications, the A116 has a 5-inch IPS display with a 1280x720 pixel resolution. Under the hood, it has a 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek MT 6589 processor along with 1GB of RAM. It also shows off a PowerVR SGX5 GPU.

The Micromax A116 Canvas HD boasts of dual-SIM capabilities. It has 4GB of built-in storage, expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. The rear of the device houses an 8MP camera whereas the front has a 0.3MP shooter for video chatting. It also has a 1600mAh battery. Panasonic develops micro colour splitters for super sensitive sensors

Panasonic Corporation has developed unique "micro colour splitters", which separate the light that falls on image sensors by exploiting light's wavelike properties.

 

Panasonic recently had a breakthrough in low-light camera sensor technology. According to reports, it has developed micro colour splitters that split the light directed at image sensors to create bright images in low light situations. This is a type of filterless camera sensor which allows the sensor to gather much more light and aid low-light photography.

In this new sensor, instead of using an array of tiny microfilters like the traditional CFA (Colour Filter Array) which use a red, green, or blue light-transmitting filter placed above each sensor, Panasonic uses what they call “micro color splitters” that allow light to diffract so that various combinations of wavelengths hit different photosites. This solution gathers about 1.85 times more light in the sensor.

The traditional CFA technology filters block 50 - 70% of the incoming light before it even reaches the sensor. But the use of this new technology from Panasonic makes color filters unnecessary as the “micro color splitters” control the diffraction of light at a microscopic level and allow for more light. This can be seen in the test image comparison released by Panasonic below:

Difference between conventional method and the new developed method

Panasonic holds 21 Japanese patents and 16 overseas patents, including pending applications, for this development. This new technology from Panasonic can be applied to existing or future sensors to enable them to capture images in vivid colour.
